Collaboration: Architectural Panel System
2005.
An exploration in the University of Tennessee’s Digital Modeling and Fabrication Lab, this project investigated patterns found in nature to produce an architectural panel system. This design focused on the random pattern of suckers found on the underside of octopus tentacles. The soft appearance and liquid movement of the suckers was abstracted and translated into Maya Alias software. The goal became to explore the application of this pattern into an interactive architectural panel system that speaks of movement and tactility. Students in the DM+F Lab were encouraged to design specifically for the fabrication process, as the capabilities of the CNC would inform much of the final design.
